TheOlympics——NeverGaveup

潘嘉贝上海外国语大学附属外国语学校高一阅读书目:奥林匹克TheOlympics(DK英汉对照百科读物)

TheOlympicGames,whichoriginatedinancientGreece,isthemostdistinguishedsportingeventintheworld。Onceeveryfouryears,theutmostathletesfromallaroundareluredtogathertogetherandsparenoeffortstocompeteagainsteachotherandtrytowinamedalforthecountrythattheyrepresent。Franklyspeaking,thatwasvirtuallyallIknewabouttheworld-famousOlympicGamesbeforeIhadreadabookentitledTheOlympicspublishedbyForeignLanguageTeachingandResearchPress。However,Ifoundevenmorephilosophybeyondjustwinningmedalsfromreadingthebook,whichwasbeyondmyimaginationandconsiderablyinspiring。

Someoneoncesaid,“Wereeverybodyonearthinvolvedinsomekindofsport,ourworldwouldbefreeofwarforlong。”Startingfromthreethousandyearsago,theancientOlympicGameshaslongbeenaneventnotonlyforcompetitionbutalsoforpeace。Inancienttimes,nowarwasallowedbetweenthecitiesduringtheGames,whichwasrathersurprisingtomesinceIcouldhardlyimaginewarriorsactallyputtingdowntheirweaponsandgiveabreakforpeace。Theprecioustraditionofpeacecontinued:IwouldneverfailtorecallthesceneoftheopeningceremonieswhenNorthandSouthKoreanathletesenteringthestadiumwiththeirhandsheldtogether。ThetwoneighboringcountriesthatusedtobeenemiesarenolongerenemiesduringtheGames。Insteadtheybecamefriends。Speakingofthe2004AthensOlympics,perhapsmostpeoplewouldhavethesameopinionthatthemostnoablepartoftheopeningceremonyarrivedwhenIraqiandAfghanrepresentativesshowedup。Thesetwounfortunatenations,thepeopleofwhichhaveundergoneinnumerablewars,arecomingbackagaintotaketheirownresponsibilityinworldsportsafterrecentinvasionsbyAmerica。ThefearlesspeopleofIraqandAfghanistanareoncemoresharingthespiritoftheGameswithpeoplefromtherestoftheworld。

Thereisanotherstoryinthisbookthatmakesmedeepinthoughts。ThereisnodoubtthatthemostunusualOlympicGameseverinhistoryisthe1936OlympicsheldinGermany,whichwasthenruledbytheNaziParty。LedbyAdolfHitler,theNazibelievedthattheso-calledAryanpeopleweresuperiortoallothersinallaspects。TheylookeddownuponJewsandblacks,thelatterofwhichwasamajorconstitutionoftheUnitedStatesOlympicteam。Despitethebarrierthatfacedhim,theAfricanAmericanJesseOwens,whowasamostoutstandingrunnerandjumper,didallthathecouldandfinallywongoldmedalsforhiscountryandwenthomeahero。ThisrevealsanotherfactthatnopoweronearthisabletohinderthesacredOlympicGames。Forallparticipants,nomatterwhattheirgender,race,nationalitiesandbackgroundsare,equalityisdistributedamongeveryonewhoobservestheGame’srules。

Atthe2004AthensOlympics,ourChineseteamdidextraordinarilywell。Werankedsecondonthemedallistsforthefirsttimeinhistory。Inmyopinion,however,weshouldnotonlyconcentrateonthefigureofmedals;insteadthestrengthandperseveranceofthosewhofailedtogetanymedalsoughttobehighlycherished。Whethereversuccessorfailure,whetherevercheerortear,whetherevermedalornot,thenever-gave-upspiritsofathletesarealwaysmotivatingus。Ibelieveintheyear2008,theworldwillfocusalltheirattentiontoBeijing,China,wherethegloryoftheGameswillcontinuetothriveforever!
